The Last Samurai
The latest Tom Cruise star vehicle to hit the silver screen is an ambitious war epic and morality play set in a fictionalization of the Satsuma Revolt of 1877. Takamori Saigo led an outnumbered and outgunned force of traditionalist warriors to their ultimate doom in opposition to what he saw as the selling-out of Japanese cultural heritage to corrupt Western encroachment. That tragic hero of Japanese history is represented here by the character Lord Katsumoto, an archetypal warrior-poet superbly portrayed by actor Ken Watanabe, and his story is told by way of his association with the wholly fictional American war hero Captain Algren, as played by Cruise. . . .
