SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Ultimately, we anticipate changing the submissions process to a form involving posting your submission from the webpage. For the moment, however, we accept submissions by email at [email deleted: not currently accepting submissions]. Initial submission standards will become increasingly stringent. For the time being, follow these guidelines, and realize that failure to conform to the requirements of submission outlined below will result in either rejection or arbitrary decision about the disposition of the submitted article:
- Submissions should be sent in Rich Text Format (.rtf) or simple textfile (.txt) if at all possible, as an attachment to email. Do not use “smart quotes” or indent the beginnings of paragraphs. Double-space between paragraphs. In Microsoft Word, a file can be saved in Rich Text Format in the following manner.
- choose "File" from drop-down menus
- click "Save As"
- in "Save as type", choose "Rich Text Format (*.rtf)"
- click "Save"
- Submissions should include your (hopefully legal) name, what you would like your byline to be (name that credit is given to in publication), a title for the article, and the full text of the article itself.
- All submissions are subject to editing. If you would like to have final approval of the edited version of the story, indicate that in your submission email every time you submit an article (do not assume that telling us once will guarantee that we send edited copy to you every time you submit an article). Requiring final approval will result in delays in publication.
- Please indicate in your first submission to us whether you have an IM (Instant Messenger) account, and what your user name/number is on that service, so that we can correspond with you in regards to your submission(s) more quicly. At this time, administrative staff at @political use AIM, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and ICQ.
- Include a statement in the body of your email unequivocally making it clear that you have the legal and ethical right to license the attached work for publication without violating any third party's legal right. Cite sources where appropriate.
@political is an opinion/editorial news commentary source. Accepted submission topics include (but are not limited to) politics, culture, economics, science and technology, reviews, and satire. Our emphasis is generally on commentary and analysis, and we welcome all well-supported views. Please ensure that new submissions are not simply rehashes of previously published materials. Responses to previous articles and elaborations upon them are not necessarily discouraged, however.
At this time, @political regretfully cannot offer payment for unsolicited articles. If @political should begin offering payment, it will only be for articles submitted and published exclusively at @political. Acceptance or rejection of a submitted article will be accomplished as quickly as circumstances allow, and returned items for rewrites should be an expected hazard of submission if the submission's concept is sound.
When submitting a piece for publication at @political, you are implicitly and explicitly (see above) assumed to have sole right to license of the material submitted.
Freelance contributors are welcome. Regular columnists will have deadlines tied to a particular day of the week, though not necessarily weekly, that will be two days prior to scheduled publication date for the column. Prospective columnists will not be considered unless they can commit to a regular submission and offer examples of their writing.
All contributors to @political should feel free and encouraged to quote and link to their stories (and others). Reposting the entire text of an article is discouraged, but generally not prohibited — the idea is to draw readers to @political.
For suggestions on how to make your submission more polished and to increase its chances of being accepted and published, see our Writers' Tips and Language Conventions.
